The Carrie Diaries

Tonight was the premier of The Carrie Diaries on the CW. I didn’t know what to expect from this show and wasn’t going to watch it until I saw it was on tonight. Then I decided to watch it.

The Carrie Diaries, like Sex and the City is based on the book of the same name by Candice Bushnell. It tells Carrie Bradshaws story when she was a teenager and just beginning to get “bug” for Manhattan or as people in the tri-state area call it, “the city.”

Despite this show basically targeted at teens, fans of Sex and the City may be able to appreciate it simply because it gives us insight to what made Carrie who he was in the original SATC series.

There are some in constancies with the original lore of the series. Carrie’s father appears in this series and in SATC we learn that Carrie’s father left when she was a child. In this series, Carrie’s mother dies and she is left alone to live with her father and rebellious sister in a Connecticut suburb.

Carrie scores am internship in “the city” in a law firm in the financial district of Manhattan. She is very excited about this and her father lets her choose something of her mother’s from a very adult Carrie like closet. She chooses sunglasses and wears them to her her first day in the internship.

We get a glimpse of Carrie Bradshaw’s style beginnings when her nylons run when she is pushed on the street. She removes them and goes to the office and is warned when she arrives, to go to Century 21, a NYC department store for some new nylons.

The scene where a dress is dropped off for her at her little closet of an office, it reminded me of when Vivianne Westwood gave adult Carrie the wedding dress in the first Sex and the City movie.

Carrie goes out for a good time with a woman who she things is amazing on the town, in NYC blowing off a dance at her suburban high school.

Her mother was a writer and at the end she finds some journals that were her mothers and takes them and sits in front of an open window and the camera pans from the outside, like an Sex and the City, to show young Carrie writing in one of the journals, this beginning Carrie’s love for writing and her future career. I thought that was a a fitting way to in the first episode.

I’ll probably watch the show just to see where the story goes.

Update 12-4-23. I did not continue to watch the show.
