Unionization in healthcare

To unionize or not to unionize, that is the question. Do Unions have a place in healthcare? They do to a certain extent. I believe in unions as long as there is a no strike clause in the contract. Strikes for healthcare professionals are just wrong because we are there for the patients. But in Florida, a right-to-work state are they useful at all?

I’ve worked at another unionized facility and they had a good contract with decent benefits and pay. I mean let’s face it how many of us would do this job, work the long hours, and face the many stressors for no money or benefits. We have to live too. I never had a problem with this union.

Our union just presented us, TODAY with the fact that a contract has been drafted and that we would be voting on it in Tuesday, December 6th. No copy of this contract could be provided to us to look at prior to the vote. Union delegates are willing to “talk to us” about the contract but no actual contract is available. Who in their right mind would vote in something you cant read? That is just crazy! This is not “lets make a deal.”.

That is all I’m going to say because I don’t know how Much of this falls under corporate compliance and the like.

Any thoughts on unionization of healthcare facilities?
