Second Day –Orientation Day 2

Today was less overwhelming than yesterday.  I brought my own computer today and actually used it instead of the school laptops.  And that worked out really well.

We spent most of the morning on learned how to use the online library of my college.  The showed us how to access the books, E books, data bases and online journals related to nursing and medicine. We also got the guidelines for the types of websites and the age of references we can use.  Can’t be more than 10 years old but preferably 5 years or less.  We have an amazing amount of information at our fingertips.

We also posted Bio’s in our resource course so everyone in the two classes know’s who we are and what we are about.

I think the other very good thing we did today was work on test taking skills.  The tests in this class we be mostly different from any other.   These will not be knowledge questions they will be application of knowledge and theory questions. We went over the anatomy of a nursing test question and did several examples in which we answered  with these little clickers like a game show and then the results were tallied after a minute or so and we could see on a graph how everyone answered (like on Who wants to be a millionaire) I answered one of the questions from the perspective of an RT because I had no knowledge of thyroidectomy and problems associated with it.   It was interesting to see why I got the question wrong.  What they were doing was similar to what I learned in the Kettering Seminar I took when studying for my Registered Respiratory Therapy credential.

The Dean of nursing was in while we were doing these questions.  She seems nice and very happy we are there.

We also worked on our replies to our first discussion question.  I have been elected group leader for this discussion.  I am the one to compile all our posts into one large post and present it on the board.  We’ll see how that goes in a few minutes when I get started with that.
