Riddle Me This…

All those who follow this blog know that I am an RT. The semester for nursing school is just winding up and soon I will be shot like a cannon ball into weeks and weeks of reading, testing, discussion and clinical. This week is advanced renal disorders. Next week advanced cardiac disorders.

From time to time I may rant or shine light in absurdities of my current profession that I encounter while on my journey to becoming an RN.

Today’s absurdity is patients and oxygen. Why is it that oxygen by nasal cannula cannot be worn while eating? Does it somehow impede the patients ability to shovel food into their mouth? Does their body need less oxygen when they are eating than when they are just laying in bed? I really don’t think so. Depriving your body of the supplemental oxygen that you do obviously need AEB your tachypnea and coughing, is generally not a great idea.

Many times my patients don’t think I know anything because I’m not a nurse and many times you cannot tell people anything because THEY know better. I occasionally get this from Patients about medications I am administering. That is absurd. I’ve given these medications everyday that I work since I started 11 years ago. I know what they are, how they work and their effect and duration of action. Still there is always a few who think they know better. That never fails to make me shake my head when I leave their room.
