3rd and final day of OB clinical

Yesterday was my 3rd and final day in the OB clinical.  Today I followed a patient from C-section, through recovery and back to the unit and I also took care of her baby.

I was able to watch the c-section because I wasn’t with the baby nurse.  I was with the circulating nurse so I got to see what she was responsible for.  She got the patient ready  and positioned for the spinal block and wrote  down the progression of the surgery and was responsible for counting with the surgical tech for counting the instruments and lap pads and needles.

I then followed my patient to recovery where she was turned over to a PACU nurse and we monitored her fundus, her lochia, blood pressure, pain and the progression of the spinal wearing off.   Then it was back to Mother Baby unit.

I did some vitals on mom, did a complete postpartum assessment and then went to lunch.  Upon return from lunch I was asked to feed the baby.  And I did so under the radiant warmer because the baby temp was a little cool.  This baby (little girl) ate like a champ.  When we removed the bottle from her mouth to burp her she would root around with her little eyes closed looking for the nipple.   So cute.  She was just beautiful.

I didn’t pass any drugs but did perform a full newborn assessment on my baby. In post conference I didn’t have much to say because my case wasn’t not out of the ordinary.

Today, we took our OB pharmacology exam and another Dosage exam.  The second dosage exam had a lot of extraneous words and numbers. Some of the questions were tricky but I passed. I don’t know my exact grade on that but I know that I passed because the teacher  announced that everyone did.  I got an 84 on the OB pharmacology exam.  NOt terrible, but not as high as I had hoped.

After our two exams, we had orientation for Florida Hospital.   We don’t go there next but I’m guessing the generic track students do so we had orientation with them.  They gave us a nice spread for lunch and it was tasty.

Tuesday, I start my Pediatric rotation over at Arnold Palmer Hospital.  We will register soon for next semester and it looks like I have two choices.  Either three tuesdays and three wednesdays (adult health and mental health respectively) or 6 tuesdays (adult health and mental health).  Since I frequently work Mondays at my job I may pick the tuesdays and wednesdays because we have to go to the hospital the night before and get information on our assigned patient for the next day.  I don’t get off until 7pm and if I have to drive 40 minutes after work, look up information on my patients and drive 40 minutes home and get up the next day it will be very hard.  Maybe I can rearrange my work schedule so I don’t have to work Mondays and pick the tuesday clinical days.  We’ll see.  Can’t register until 7-17.

An obstetrician is a physician who delivers babies and is in the practice of obstetrics while a gynecologist is a physician who specializes in treating diseases of the female reproductive organs. The word “gynecology” comes from the Greek “gyno, gynaikos” meaning woman + “logia” meaning study, so gynecology literally is the study of women.
